Postgraduate positions
|
| |
|
As postgraduate positions are funded by the Ministry of Education, the Doctoral Programme pays the salary, other bills and administrative costs for postgraduate students. However, costs for rentals, equipment and supplies are not compensated for.
|
| |
| The right to study |
|
The right to study at the Doctoral Programme is granted for a restricted period of four years. The period may be prolonged only due to special reasons, for example maternity leave or civil- or military service. Prolongations are not granted after the public examination of the dissertation.
|
| |
| Accepting a granted postgraduate position may be postponed with justified reasons for a maximum of 6 months following the granting of the position. In cases of postponement, the Steering Group decides whether or not the duration of the graduate school is extended by a period corresponding to the postponement. |
| |
| After the day of public examination, the doctoral student must vacate the funded graduate school position within the 4 months following the month ot the public examination. The doctoral student must give written notification of resignation to the Doctoral Programme. |
| |
| After the completion of the four-year graduate school period, the
doctoral student may belong to the Doctoral Programme for one year. During
this time, the student does not have to right to doctoral student
salary or financial benefits. A doctoral graduate may join the alumni
network of the Doctoral Programme. |
| |
| The doctoral student must take the earned annual holiday. Untaken holidays are not compensated financially. |
| |
| University as an employer, Leaves of absence |
| The doctoral student has a fixed-term employment relationship to the university in which he or she takes degree. Therefore, the doctoral students has the same rights and responsibilities as the rest of the university staff. The closest superior of the doctoral student is his or her principal supervisor, and in general administrative issues, the superior is usually the Head of the department in question. |
| |
| Generally, the doctoral student's leaves of absence do not prolong the four-year period in the Doctoral Programme, except for the statutory maternity- and paternity and parental leaves as well as civil and military service based on legislation which do not shorten the funding period. Each childcare leave (hoitovapaa) will prolong the funding period by a maximum of one year. |
| |
Postgraduate students occupying positions funded by the Ministry of Education apply for a leave of absence which are based on legislation (maternity- and paternity leave, military- and civil service) from the Head of the Doctoral Programme by sending freely formulated application to the coordinator.
Other applications for a leave of absence (e.g. "hoitovapaa"/nursing leave etc.) can submit to the Steering Group of the Doctoral Programme by sending freely formulated application to the coordinator. The school may recommend that the applicant's department grant the leave. The Doctoral Programme assumes that all students inform the school of their leaves of absence. |
| |
| Courses and travel expenses |
|
Postgraduate students have the right to participate in courses and events arranged by the Doctoral Programme of Psychology free of charge. The Programme also provides funding for some congress- and travel expenses.
|
| |
| Affiliate positions |
| |
| In principle, the abovementioned regulations also apply to postgraduate students whose positions are not funded by the Ministry of Education. However, in this case, the Doctoral Programme does not pay salary. Prior to accepting a position at the Doctoral Programme students should make sure that the timetable the employer has prepared for the dissertation work at hand is adequate. |
