The Ministry of Education has established 14 postgraduate positions at the Graduate School of Psychology for the years 2007-2011 and 3 positions for the years 2006-2009. The Academy of Finland has recently established 11 positions for the period 2010-2013.

Selection procedure |
| A new application process starts at the beginning of the each four-year period of the Graduate School. In case a position becomes vacant during a given period, it is filled with an applicant from the standby queue or through a new application process. The available positions are announced on these pages, in Psykonet's www-pages, in department of psychology's (in universities belonging to Psykonet) notice boards and other communication links. |

The Steering Group of the Graduate School of Psychology selects the students and decide the lenght of the funding period (maximum 48 months). The selection of students is based on the documents submitted by the applicant and the evaluation given by the supervisor. The postgraduate positions are allocated to different universities in the order of the applicants'ranking.
A standby list will also be confirmed. This list is used in filling any openings during the four-year period. The list will remain valid until the next public call for applications.
Accepting a granted postgraduate position may be postponed for a justified reason for a maximum of 6 months following the granting of the position. In case of postponement, the Steering Group decides whether or not the duration of the graduate school position is extended by a period correspondint to the postponement.

| In order to select students, the Steering Group: |

|
1) estimates the supervisors' qualifications on the basis of their CV, the list of publications and other required documentation. An applicant whose supervisors do not fulfill the requirements will not be considered.
2) reviews the evaluation of the applicant given by the applicant's primary (first) supervisor. The primary supervisor must also submit a list of publications of the last ten years to Graduate School.
3) may invite external experts to evaluate applicants.
4) gives the applicants a ranking in which order the positions and standby positions are awarded,
5) takes into consideration the equal distribution of the positions between different fields of psychology, supervisors and departments of psychology in Finnish universities.
6) grants continuances to postgraduates who have a position at the Graduate School but whose period is unfinished due to maternity or paternity leave or civil or military service at the beginning of a new four-year period of the Graduate School. Such continuances are only granted if the dissertation work has thus far progressed without difficulty.

Evaluation criteria |

The selection of students is based on the documents submitted by the applicant and the evaluation given by the supervisor. The student member of the Steering Group may not participate in the evaluation of the scientific competence of the applicants and their supervisors.

| Absolute criteria: |
| |
1) Master's degree in psychology or in a related field.
2) Right to carry out postgraduate studies within the field of psychology with an aim of obtaining a doctoral degree at a university belonging to the Psykonet network (Universities of Helsinki, Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Tampere, Turku and Åbo Akademi).
3) At least two supervisors, one of whom one acts as the primary supervisor. Both supervisor must have PhD and at least one of the supervisors must be a docent. |

Students of the Graduate School of Psychology may not hold positions simultaneously in
other graduate schools. |

| Evaluation-based criteria: |
| |
|
1) Research plan and schedule for the doctoral thesis. Scientific quality is the most important criterion, along with the feasibility of the research plan.
2) Scientific credits: An account of the applicant's studies and scientific work during at least two years preceding application.
3) Quality of research environment.
4) Written statement from supervisor.
